A yet to be identified Police officer has shot as well killed a 15 year old Secondary school student identifies as Paul Kehinde Alade, who was on his way to the Examination Centre at Gbagi area in Egbeda local government area, Ibadan area on Tuesday.
The deceased was to be hit by the stray bullet at the lower part of his body.
His father who was said be driving the deceased alongside his twin brother to the Examination Centre as at of the incident rushed him to Welfare Hospital at Alakia but later transferred to the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The bullet, as reliably gathered penetrated through the back seat of the car where the deceased was seated alongside his twin brother.
The deceased was hit at the lower part of his body which eventually resulted in his untimely death.
Given the account of the incident, his father said, “I couldn’t believe that my son is dead.
“We left house together beaming with life with assurance that he would come out in flying colour.
“Now, I am carrying his lifeless bodies around the town. I was told that the culprit with his colleagues are chasing one driver who allegedly evaded arrest.
But must that be reason why my son was mistakenly shot.
Also, grieving over the death of the deceased, his twin brother said, we sat together at the back sit of our Dad car on our way to the school.
We had a gunshots from behind. I was shocked to see blood oozing from my brother”s side.
I thought the situation could be managed but it was too late as he was confirmed to be Brought In Dead at the hospital.
Irked by the development, the protesters carried the corpse of the deceased to the Governor’s office, Secretariat in demand for justice.
Reacting to the tragic incident, the Oyo State Government commiserated with the family of the deceased, stating that the state government would work with the Oyo State Police Command to investigate the matter and ensure that justice is served.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, the state government noted that the incident was totally avoidable, noting how what started as a traffic offence, with the father of the slain boy driving against traffic, resulted in the loss of an innocent life.
It charged residents to remain calm as the police and the government handle the situation, while it also warned residents against breaking traffic rules.
The state government clarified that contrary to claims that the incident occurred while the police were chasing a suspected internet fraudster, the incident actually occurred during a routine operation against traffic infraction, carried out by men of the Oyo State Road Traffic Maintenance Authority (OYRTMA).
According to the government, OYRTMA officials in conjunction with a team from the police, embarked on the traffic operation on Alakia Old Road following complaints from residents over constant one-way traffic violations that have led to deaths and life-threatening injuries on the axis.
It explained further that the backup from the police became imperative following assaults on OYRTMA officials and a recent killing of one official in Ibadan by a traffic offender.
The government maintained that the father of the slain boy drove a tinted black Honda Accord Car with registration number FST 639 JU against the traffic at around 7.30 a.m.
It noted that it was during an attempt to apprehend the traffic offender that a policeman, who is already being investigated by the Oyo State Police Command, allegedly aimed a shot at one of the tyres of the car, which missed the target.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State House of Assembly has taken a strong stance on the incident describing it as “painful and unwarranted” and resolved to take cogent steps to ensure justice is served.
The incident was brought to the House by Hon. Olasunkanmi Babalola, the Deputy Leader of the House, under a Matter of Urgent Public Importance.
According to him, the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, when a police officer pursuing a suspect along Gbagi Market Road in Ibadan discharged live ammunition in a public space, resulting in the death of the student who was on his way to a WAEC examination center.
The House expressed deep sorrow over the incident and commiserated with the family of the deceased student and the entire Ibadan community.
Members of the House who were visibly shaken by the news called on the Oyo State Commissioner of Police to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the officer responsible is identified and prosecuted according to the law.
Speaking during the Tuesday’s plenary sitting, the Speaker, Oyo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, after listening to submissions and suggestions from lawmakers, announced that the House will constitute a top delegation to visit family of the deceased to commiserate with them and to demand for justice.
This call for investigation and prosecution according to the house is aimed at bringing the perpetrator to justice and providing succour to the family of the deceased student.
The House further resolved to urge the Executive Arm of Government to provide psychological support and financial compensation to the bereaved family.
This support the House said is necessary to help the family cope with the loss of their loved one and to ensure that they receive the necessary assistance during this difficult time.
The House also resolved to urge the Ministry of Information and Orientation to embark on a statewide awareness campaign on citizens’ rights and police conduct.
After deliberating on the sad incident, the House constituted an eight-man Committee to be led by the Deputy Speaker to visit the Oyo State Commissioner of Police on Thursday and report to the House immediately.
The Committee will work to ensure that the incident is thoroughly investigated and that those responsible are held accountable.
The House appealed to the Inspector General of Police to issue clear directives prohibiting the reckless use of firearms in public places and to ensure officers undergo regular training in responsible crowd and suspect management.
