The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the recent endorsement of President Bola Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a desperate and panicked move aimed at clinging to power.
In a statement issued Thursday night, CUPP National Secretary, Peter Ameh, expressed concern over the endorsement, which occurred during the APC National Summit.
At the event, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, proposed Tinubu’s candidacy, a motion seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.
Ameh described the move as premature and undemocratic, particularly given that President Tinubu is only two years into his current term.
He argued that it reflects growing anxiety within the ruling party, which is increasingly disconnected from the harsh economic realities confronting Nigerians.
“This unprecedented move, just two years into President Tinubu’s term, signals deep unease within the APC camp amid widespread public dissatisfaction with the harsh economic realities facing the nation,” Ameh said.
He asserted that the endorsement does not represent the will of the people and criticized APC leaders for attempting to manipulate the democratic process due to fear of electoral defeat.
“Nigerians across the country view this move as a troubling indication of the APC’s disconnect from the masses and an attempt to undermine the democratic process,” he added.
CUPP vowed to resist any manipulation of the electoral process and called on Nigerians to stay vigilant ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We stand united in our commitment to resist any attempts to manipulate, steal, or rig the 2027 elections.
“The Nigerian electorate will not be silenced, and we will ensure that our voices are heard through the power of our votes,” Ameh declared.
He urged citizens to defend democracy, describing the 2027 elections as a pivotal moment for the country.
