A deadly communal clash has rocked the Aagba community in Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State, claiming the life of a septuagenarian identified as Madam Rachael Bamidele.
The violent outbreak, which reportedly stemmed from a lingering land dispute, left nine houses in ruins and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
According to eyewitnesses, the assault lasted several hours, forcing terrified residents to flee to neighboring communities for safety. The chaos only subsided following the swift intervention of police operatives.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Johnson Adenola, stated that nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.
He also confirmed the recovery of three unregistered Boxer motorcycles believed to have been used during the assault.
In a statement, the Commissioner said:
“The Oyo State Police Command has responded to the April 5, 2025, attack on Aagba Community, Surulere Local Government Area.
“The attack resulted in nine houses being razed and properties worth millions of naira looted or destroyed. The burning, looting, and destruction of properties appear to have been calculated and systematically carried out, targeting individuals involved in an ongoing civil litigation over disputed land.”
The tragic incident claimed the life of Madam Rachael Bamidele and forced villagers to desert the community temporarily.
CP Adenola revealed that the violence was allegedly carried out by residents of a neighboring community over a long-standing boundary conflict.
To restore order, the police deployed specialized intelligence and tactical units, including personnel from the Police Mobile Force (PMF). Their prompt action helped stabilize the situation, enabling displaced residents to return to their homes.
Among the suspects arrested is 33-year-old Salawudeen Ismaila from the nearby Oko community. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects still at large, with assurances from the police that the arrested individuals will soon be charged in court.
The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on lawlessness, vowing to protect lives and property across the state. It warned against acts of self-help and urged residents to seek lawful avenues in resolving disputes.
