Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has disclosed plan to make some damning revelations on the day of official coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade.
Oba Owoade was presented the instruments of office by Makinde, at a brief ceremony held at the executive chamber of the governor’s office yesterday.
In his brief address shortly before presenting the staff and certificate of office to the new monarch, Makinde, who noted that it was not yet time for him to speak, however, issued a stern warning to allegedly corrupt kingmakers involved in the ongoing controversy surrounding the selection of the Alaafin of Oyo.
Makinde vowed to speak on the coronation day which is about four weeks from the day he presented the instruments of office to the new king indicating that certain revelations would be made public soon.
The governor maintained that he decided not to meddle in the appointment of the new Alaafin because of his administration’s belief in openness and transparency.
Speaking further, Makinde, who affirmed that those found culpable of corruption in the process of selecting the new Alaafin would be prosecuted, also urged those involved to return any illicit funds they may have received.
The process to select the new Alaafin, following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III in 2022, has been mired in allegations of bribery, favoritism, and undue interference.
Governor Makinde, who has maintained a firm stance against corruption in traditional institutions, hinted at possessing incriminating information about some kingmakers’ roles in the allegations.
Makinde reiterated that the Alaafin stool remains a sacred and revered institution in Yoruba land stressing that It must not be tarnished by greed or corrupt practices.
He further warned that any individuals found guilty of corrupt practices would face legal consequences.
“Today is not the time to talk, I will talk on the coronation day,” Makinde said.
Speaking further, Makinde said: “Let me also say briefly that those that are still hell-bent on destabilising the traditional institution in Oyo, the government is not letting down.
“We will prosecute them. The money they collected; they will still be prosecuted except they go to Kabiyesi. If he forgives them, I will also forgive them.
