As part of a major political realignment, Nigeria’s opposition coalition, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its primary platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
The decision was made during a high-level closed-door meeting held yesterday in Abuja, attended by key opposition leaders.
According to a reliable source present at the gathering, Atiku chaired the meeting, which concluded with the formation of a committee tasked with developing a comprehensive framework for the coalition’s operations.
A public launch is expected in the coming weeks.
Established in 2005 and headquartered in Abuja, the ADC is currently chaired by Chief Ralph Okey. The party will now serve as the political vehicle for the coalition’s mission to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Prominent figures within the emerging alliance include former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and Babachir David Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
Westernmirror.com.ng reports that his development marks the most concrete effort yet by opposition forces to unite under a single banner against President Tinubu, whose administration came into power in May 2023.
The move to adopt the ADC follows months of speculation over which political party would be chosen as the coalition’s platform, with several others previously under consideration.
The source added that announcements regarding the coalition’s leadership structure and electoral strategy will be made once the committee completes its initial mandate.
Opposition leaders are reportedly committed to presenting a viable and credible alternative to the current administration.
