The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its 2025 Elective National Convention will take place from Saturday, November 15 to Sunday, November 16, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
This was disclosed in a communiqué issued at the end of the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held today, Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
According to the communiqué presented by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, PDP National Publicity Secretary, the NEC resolved to hold the much-anticipated convention following extensive deliberations on the state of the party and the nation.
NEC expressed satisfaction with the resolution of all internal disputes, praising party members for demonstrating unity, patriotism, and commitment to the PDP’s democratic ideals.
“The PDP remains a strong, united, cohesive, stable and focused political party, repositioned to effectively play its role as the leading opposition party in galvanizing all efforts towards rescuing our dear nation from the catastrophic misrule of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the communiqué stated.
The NEC mandated the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to formally notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the date, venue, and agenda of the national convention, in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and relevant INEC regulations.
Also, the NEC approved the composition of both the National Convention Committee and the National Convention Zoning Committee to ensure a transparent and credible convention process.
On the political front, the NEC directed the PDP National Working Committee to initiate legal actions to reclaim the seats of members of the National and State Assemblies who were elected under the PDP but have defected to other political parties. Citing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), NEC affirmed that such defectors automatically lose their legislative seats due to the absence of any division within the PDP.
The committee also condemned the participation of some members in activities of rival parties, warning them to desist and reaffirm loyalty to the PDP. NEC, however, assured that efforts were ongoing to address the concerns of such members.
Reaffirming its role as the leading opposition party, NEC declared the PDP as the platform of choice for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections, pledging to continue working with like-minded citizens to end APC’s “rudderless and insensitive” governance.
The 102nd NEC meeting is scheduled to hold on Monday, August 25, 2025.
