Governor Seyi Makinde has hinted at imminent political decisions regarding the future leadership of Oyo State.
This was as he revealed that behind-the-scenes consultations are already underway as part of a structured transition process.
Makinde made this known in his latest newsletter, where he acknowledged growing public interest in the state’s political direction ahead of the next phase of governance.
According to him, engagements have been held with “credible individuals,” and a formal announcement will be made in due course.
“We have made some quiet moves,” the governor stated, adding that he would soon communicate the next line of action to the people.
This is a decision he said would reflect both the progress recorded under his administration and the need to secure the state’s future.
Beyond state politics, the governor also raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning against what he described as a gradual drift toward a one-party system.
Makinde pointed to developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as well as recent positions taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary, as indicators that require urgent national reflection.
He noted that increasing pressure on opposition voices and perceived weakening of democratic institutions could erode accountability if not addressed.
“A healthy democracy depends on balance, credible alternatives, and strong institutions,” Makinde said.
He warned that when opposition becomes ineffective, governance suffers and citizens bear the consequences.
The governor, however, dismissed suggestions that Nigeria had reached a point of no return, urging citizens not to succumb to apathy or silence.
He called for sustained civic engagement, stressing that democracy thrives on plurality and the active participation of citizens and leaders alike.
Makinde further disclosed plans to engage stakeholders across various sectors in the coming days to explore ways of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic space through inclusive and lawful means.
He maintained that protecting democracy requires vigilance, open dialogue, and a collective commitment to ensuring that institutions remain accountable to the people.
