The Special Adviser on Legislative Matters to the Governor of Oyo State, Hon. Samuel Adejumobi, popularly known as “Agbarapo,” has cautioned against any impeachment attempt on Governor Seyi Makinde.
This was as he declared that such a move was dead on arrival as it would be strongly resisted by the people of the state.
Adejumobi issued the warning on Wednesday in a statement while reacting to reports of an alleged plot to impeach the governor by elements in the opposition party and claims of financial inducement aimed at influencing members of the Oyo State House of Assembly.
He described the allegation as disturbing, politically motivated targeted at creating political instability in the state, stressing that such allegation attempt was capable of undermining the state’s hard-earned stability and progress under Makinde.
This was contained in a statement on Wednesday, April 15, where the governor’s aide emphasized that Oyo State is not a theatre for political recklessness, stressing that any effort to subvert democratic norms would be met with lawful and resolute rejection.
He maintained that Makinde’s growing popularity within the national political landscape has become a serious concern for opposition elements.
“Oyo State is not Rivers State,” any attempt to remove Governor Seyi Makinde through the backdoor like they attempted in Rivers will be fiercely resisted by the good people of the state.
“Our democracy must be protected, and the the people’s will must be respected at all times,” he said.
He noted that Governor Makinde’s administration enjoys widespread support due to its performance across key sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development.
According to him, such unprecedented achievements have strengthened public confidence and rendered any plot to destabilize the government futile stressing that the relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government have remained robust and cordial as partners in progress since 2019.
Adejumobi also expressed concern over allegations that some lawmakers were offered financial inducements to facilitate the governor’s removal, noting that such move, if true was capable of eroding the gains of the good governance under Makinde.
“It is deeply troubling to hear allegations of monetary inducements targeted at lawmakers. Such actions, if proven, are not only unethical but also a grave threat to democratic governance.
“We call on relevant authorities to investigate and ensure that the truth prevails,” he said.
The Legislative Adviser commended members of the Oyo State House of Assembly for their commitment to constitutional order and their continued collaboration with the executive arm in delivering democratic dividends to residents of the state.
Agbarapo, who was a former Majority Leader of the state Assembly further urged political actors to desist from actions capable of heating up the polity, warning that desperation for power should never override the rule of law and public interest.
“Oyo State has enjoyed relative peace and remarkable progress under Governor Makinde’s leadership. Political stakeholders, particularly opposition elements, must avoid actions that could jeopardize this stability.
Democracy thrives on the rule of law and respect for democratic process, not subversion,” he added.
Adejumobi reaffirmed the Makinde administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance, noting that the governor remains focused on consolidating his achievements and fulfilling his mandate to the people.
