The Minister of Power is set to formally resign from his position in the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday April 22, in what an insider described as a calculated move to pursue the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A source close to the minister confirmed exclusively to Western mirror.com.ng on Tuesday evening that the minister has concluded consultations across key political blocs within Oyo APC and at the national level, clearing the path for his formal declaration in the coming weeks.
The source said the Minister’s decision to step down was reached after “extensive deliberations with President Bola Tinubu at the Villa in Abuja on Tuesday evening.
“The resignation is stevening because It will allows him to focus fully on the political process in Oyo without the distractions of office.
“He has been under pressure from supporters and political allies to make this move,” the source disclosed.
Although no official statement had been issued as of press time, aides within the ministry confirmed that preparations for a formal handover were underway, signaling the imminence of his exit from the Federal Executive Council.
The minister, who has played a visible role in Nigeria’s power sector reforms, is said to be banking on support from the president, his administrative record and political network to consolidate support within the APC.
The source noted that his ambition could reshape the dynamics within the Oyo APC, where several aspirants are already positioning themselves for the party’s ticket.
“This is not just another declaration. It introduces a heavyweight into the race. The permutations will change, alliances will shift, and the contest will become more intense,” the source said.
While supporters of the minister have begun quiet mobilization across key local government areas, some party stakeholders are calling for a transparent and inclusive primary process to avoid internal divisions.
