Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have commenced a review of the outcomes of the party’s recent primaries across the country amid growing political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The latest move by the governors comes as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of 2027, with the APC leadership expected to intensify consultations aimed at maintaining party unity and consolidating its electoral fortunes nationwide.
The governors, under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), resolved to meet with the APC National Chairman, Netanwe Yilwatda, and other key leaders of the ruling party to discuss the way forward and begin preparations for the next electoral cycle.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the forum which ended in the early hours of Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Chairman of the PGF and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said the governors undertook a comprehensive review of the party’s recent political activities, including primaries conducted across the 36 states, the Ekiti governorship election and a number of by-elections in which the APC recorded victories.
According to Uzodimma, the governors expressed satisfaction with the party’s performance but emphasized the need for continuous engagement with party stakeholders to consolidate its gains and address emerging challenges.
He said the forum also deliberated on broader national issues, particularly concerns affecting Nigeria’s democratic process and the socio-economic well-being of citizens.
“We have resolved to work towards solving the problems and challenges facing our democratic space and ensuring that our people are better off,” Uzodimma stated.
The Imo governor disclosed that members of the forum agreed to hold consultations with the national leadership of the APC as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structures ahead of the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
“We also resolved to meet with the leadership of the party to plan the coming 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections. We are ready and good to go,” he said.
Political observers view the planned meeting as a crucial step in harmonising interests within the ruling party, especially as discussions intensify over candidate selection processes, party cohesion and electoral strategy ahead of the next general elections.
Uzodimma reaffirmed the commitment of APC governors to working closely with the party’s national leadership to sustain the party’s dominance and ensure effective governance across the country.
He noted that the governors remained focused on strengthening the APC and supporting policies aimed at improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
The meeting was attended by governors from several APC-controlled states, including Ekiti, Zamfara, Taraba, Lagos, Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom and Borno, among others.
