The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old security guard, Oladapo Felix, over the alleged shooting of a resident at Zion Estate, Yakoya Area of Elewuro, Akobo, Ibadan.
The command also recovered four locally made single-barrel guns and a machete from the suspect’s duty post.
The state police spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The incident occurred at about 4am on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when the victim, identified as Bolaji Oladipupo, reportedly came out of his residence to pump water.
According to the police, the victim heard the sound of a siren around his house and proceeded outside to ascertain its source, but was confronted by the security guard.
The victim reportedly told investigators that he identified himself as a resident of the house but was nevertheless shot by the suspect.
Following the report, operatives of the Akobo Police Division visited the scene and arrested Felix, who resides in Zion Estate, Yakoya Area of Elewuro, Akobo, Ibadan.
The police said preliminary investigation established that the suspect confessed to shooting the victim.
A subsequent search of his duty post led to the recovery of two serviceable locally made single-barrel guns, two unserviceable locally made single-barrel guns and a machete.
The recovered weapons have been secured as exhibits, according to the command.
The victim is currently receiving medical treatment and responding to treatment, while investigators intensify efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The police said the investigation would establish what transpired immediately before the incident, the circumstances that led to the use of the firearm and how the recovered weapons came to be in the suspect’s possession.
The command also said the investigation would determine all relevant facts and guide further action in accordance with the law.
While acknowledging the contribution of private security guards and other members of the private security sector to the protection of lives and property in Oyo State, the command urged them to remain professional, disciplined and emotionally restrained in the discharge of their duties.
It advised security personnel to exercise sound judgment at all times and avoid allowing anger, provocation or other emotions to influence their actions, particularly in situations requiring restraint and de-escalation.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed a thorough and professional investigation into the incident.
