Oyo state Governor, Seyi Makinde has officially presented staff and instruments of office to the Elempe of Tapa, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sunday Oyekanmi Titiloye (Abioje I).
The deputy governor, Barrister Adebayo Lawal presented the staff and instruments of Office to the new monarch on behalf of the Governor.
The coronation ceremony held on Monday, July 8 at Tapa Community High School, Tapa, Ibarapa North Local Government.
The deputy governor in his address reaffirmed the commitment of the Seyi Makinde led administration to improving the traditional institution in the state while deepening the relationship between government and the institution.
Barr Lawal stated that the selection process that led to Oba Titilayo Oyekanmi’s ascension to the throne was a testament to the state government’s commitment to tradition, transparency, and the rule of law adding that the endorsement of the family, the local government, and the Ministry demonstrates the confidence reposed in the leadership of the monarch.
“As we gather to celebrate this momentous occasion, I charge Oba Titilayo Oyekanmi to embrace the responsibilities that come with this exalted position. I implore him to work closely with the government to address the pressing needs of our community, including education, healthcare, security, and economic development. By doing so, we can create a brighter future for our people and ensure the continued prosperity of Tapa.
“In particular, I urge Oba Titilayo Oyekanmi to take bold steps to tackle the scourges of kidnapping, banditry, and land grabbing that have plagued our community. Our government is committed to supporting him in this endeavor, and we expect his full cooperation in eradicating these menaces.
“As Oba Titilayo Oyekanmi begins his reign, I remind him that leadership is a sacred trust that requires wisdom, compassion, and integrity. I encourage him to listen to the voices of his people, to be a unifying force, and to lead by example. His reign should be characterized by grace, humility, and a deep commitment to the well-being of all.
“In exercise of the power conferred upon the Deputy Governor by sub-sections (1) and (2) of Section 20 of the Chiefs Law Cap 28 Vol.1 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000, I hereby present the instrument/staff of office, which symbolizes your authority as the Elempe of Tapa, to His Royal Majesty, Oba Titilayo Oyekanmi, Sunday. ”
The deputy governor expressed his appreciation to everyone involved in making the ceremony a success and thanked the people of Tapa for their unwavering support while urging them to continue to work together to build a brighter future for generations to come.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Otunba Ademola Ojo, felicitated the people of Tapa, assuring that the reign of the new monarch would usher in economic development and prosperity.
“Today, we come together to commemorate the coronation and official presentation of the staff of office to His Royal Majesty, Oba Titiloye Oyekanmi Sunday, Elempe of Tapa, the esteemed monarch who embodies the treasured cultural heritage of our land.
“This historic event serves as a pivotal moment in the chronicles of Tapa, signifying the passage of authority and leadership to a new era under the reign of our revered Oba. The ceremonial presentation of the staff of office symbolizes wisdom, valor, and unity, bestowing upon His Royal Majesty the solemn duty of shepherding his people towards a brighter and more prosperous future.” The Commissioner said.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Oyekan who succeeded late Oba Joseph Oladejo OKE in 2015 after his unanimous nomination, has been piloting the affairs of Tapa, promoting peace and collaboration with critical stakeholders to fight poverty, hunger, and socio-economic imbalance in the area.
Oba Oyekan promised to continue to perform his duties with the fear of God in promoting peace, tranquility, socio-economic balance, and social justice for the people of Tapa while engaging government at both state and local government towards the development of the area.
Present at the event are the Speaker, Oyo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Akintunde Olajide and Hon. Peter Ojedokun representing Ibarapa North/Central state constituency.
Others present are top government functionaries, members of the State Elders Council, traditional rulers, religious leaders, political stakeholders, and others.
