President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) scheduled for Tuesday, following the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari died on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged but undisclosed illness. The former military ruler and two-term civilian president was 81.
In a heartfelt tribute personally signed and released late Sunday, President Tinubu described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman to the very core.”
He highlighted his unwavering dedication to Nigeria throughout his public life.
“He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023,” Tinubu stated.
“Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.
“He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
The President further commended Buhari’s commitment to discipline in public service and his uncompromising stance against corruption, noting that the late leader consistently put national interest above personal gain.
Expressing his condolences, Tinubu extended sympathies to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children, the entire Buhari family, as well as the government and people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate.
“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the President said.
In honour of the late president’s legacy, Tinubu has directed all national flags to fly at half-staff across the country for seven days, beginning today.
He also announced that President Buhari will be accorded full state honours, in recognition of his towering contributions to Nigeria’s unity, security, and development.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness,” the statement concluded.
