Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticized the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, accusing him of bias.
The former Minister of Transportation under ex president Muhammadu Buhari stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would not have emerged victorious in the 2015 elections if Yakubu’s was the one at the helms of INEC’s affairs at the time.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News’ Prime Time, Amaechi praised former INEC chairman Attahiru Jega for overseeing a transparent registration process for APC, which was a newly formed coalition at the time under a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government.
“The current chairman of INEC, if he was the chairman of INEC in 2015, we would not have won. May God bless Jega.
“The current chairman of INEC can only be compared to Iwu,” Amaechi said, drawing a comparison to Maurice Iwu, another former INEC chairman often criticized for his tenure.
Amaechi emphasized that APC was registered under Jega’s leadership after fulfilling all necessary requirements, contrasting this with what he described as Yakubu’s unwillingness to act impartially.
“When we were to register APC, Jega opened the door and we complied with the registration requirements. He got APC registered,” he stated.
Speaking further,he said, “The current man, if you comply with all these, he would not register you. Already, INEC is biased.”
