The women wings of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Oyo State have solicited the support of Olubadan of Ibadan, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, to lend his royal voice to their ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in the state.
The plea was made during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan’s palace on Saturday, December 7, in commemoration of the 2024 16 Days of Activism Campaign Against Gender Based Violence and Harrassement with the theme: “Towards Beijing +30: Unite To End Violence Against Women and Girls”.
Speaking at the monarch’s palace, the two union leadership sought the monarch’s endorsement for their advocacy and campaign against the social menace.
The delegation, led by the Oyo state Trade Union Congress women commission chairperson, Comrade Sotuminu Funmilayo Lizzy and the Nigeria Labour Congress women committee chairperson, Comrade AIYEDUN kikelomo.
The two labor unions who’s members branded various placards with different inscriptions at the Olubadan’s palace presented a verbal petition to the monarch, urging him to use his influential position to raise awareness and rally support aimed at reducing violence against women and children.
Addressing the Olubadan, Comrade Aiyedun, who spoke on behalf of the joint delegation of the labor organizations, stressed the critical need for traditional institutions to be actively involved in the fight against GBV.
“Your Majesty, as a revered traditional ruler, your voice holds immense power in shaping public opinion and influencing societal norms. We want an end to gender based violence including child trafficking for commercial exploitation, sex trafficking, and all forms of assaults and violence against women and children.
“We appeal to you to lend your support to this cause so that we can collectively ensure that women and children in Ibadan, and across Oyo State, live free from violence and fear,” Mrs. Aiyedun said.
The plea came on the heels of growing concerns over the increasing number of gender-based violence cases in the country particularly at workplace and schools, especially domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.
In his response, the Olubadan of Ibadan, represented by High Chief Ademola Odunade, expressed declared support for the campaign and his commitment to addressing the issue, while also acknowledging that gender-based violence remains a major challenge in the society.
The monarch, lamented how government and non government institutions have continued to frustrate women and child’s rights when violated, pledged to use his influence to ensure that the message against GBV is heard across Ibadanland.
He cited how other countries at the forefront of the campaign have put in place stiff penalties including death, as well as strong laws to curb such acts, urging the women not to relent in the fight against women and children, who he noted are vulnerable members of the society.
“Gender-based violence is an issue that touches all of us. It destroys families and undermines the fabric of our society. I am fully committed to supporting this cause. As the father of this great city, I will work closely with your unions and other stakeholders to engender an environment where every woman, child, and indeed every person, feels safe and valued.” The Olubadan said.
The Olubadan’s endorsement was hailed by members of the unions as a significant step in the fight against GBV. Comrade Aiyedun reiterated that traditional rulers play a crucial role in influencing the attitudes and behaviors of local communities, particularly in matters related to cultural practices and gender equality.
“We are grateful for the Olubadan’s support. His Majesty’s endorsement will go a long way in sending a powerful message that gender-based violence is unacceptable, regardless of tradition or circumstance. This collaboration will also encourage more victims to come forward and seek the help they need without fear of judgment or stigma.”
Meanwhile the two labor unions have taken their advocacy and awareness campaign to the heart of Ibadan markets. The campaign train took off from Total Garden Roundabout en route Yemetu, OkeAremo, to Oje market then terminates at Bus stop Gate.
