The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of its highly anticipated 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was initially scheduled to take place on May 27, 2025.
The announcement comes just hours after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, formally withdrew from all agreements reached with the party’s leadership, sparking renewed tension within the party’s top ranks.
In a statement issued on Sunday evening by the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, the postponement was attributed to ongoing reconciliation efforts led by former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.
Westernmirror.com.ng reports that the Reconciliation Committee is reportedly in the final stages of addressing internal conflicts that have hindered unity within the party.
“The postponement is to allow the Sen. Bukola Saraki’s Reconciliation Committee complete its assignment of resolving some internal conflicts necessary to have a peaceful NEC Meeting,” the statement read.
Senator Anyanwu, in the statement, further clarified that a new date for the NEC meeting would be communicated in due course, in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended) and the Electoral Act of 2022.
The statement also warned against any unauthorized communication regarding the NEC meeting.
“Any notice of NEC meeting or publication signed by the Deputy National Secretary in the guise of Acting National Secretary is illegal, unauthorized and should be disregarded,” it cautioned.
This latest development comes amid increasing internal strife and shifting alliances within the party.
Wike’s decision to withdraw from earlier agreements is perceived by party stalwarts and stakeholders as a major blow to the fragile unity efforts being championed by party elders.
