The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has officially inaugurated its 74th district, the Lagelu District Society, in a significant move aimed at strengthening the Institute’s presence in southwestern Nigeria.
The event, held on November 23, 2024, in Ibadan, saw the installation of Chief (Mrs.) Omokemi Oladipo, FCA, as the pioneer chairman of the new district, alongside other key executive members.
Chief Davidson Alaribe FCA, the National President of ICAN, led the inauguration ceremony and used the occasion to urge the new leadership to place mentorship at the forefront of their agenda.
Alaribe emphasized that fostering mentorship relationships between seasoned accountants and younger professionals is essential for the long-term sustainability of the profession.
He urged the pioneer leaders, especially Oladipo, to establish robust mentorship programs to help cultivate the next generation of accountants and strengthen the Institute’s outreach.
“Mentorship is the cornerstone of professional growth. It’s critical to our expansion and ensuring that the profession evolves with the times,” said Alaribe.
He further highlighted that mentorship would not only attract new members but would also encourage younger professionals to embrace ethical practices and uphold the integrity of the profession.
In her acceptance speech, Chief (Mrs.) Oladipo expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and promised to lead with transparency, integrity, and inclusivity.
She outlined plans to engage in various outreach initiatives that combine education, professional development, and wellness programs, ensuring that members are well-equipped for the challenges ahead.
Oladipo also underscored her commitment to fostering an environment where ethical conduct and professionalism are at the core of all activities in the new district.
“My vision is to ensure that Lagelu District and Society becomes a model of excellence and together, we will uphold ICAN’s core values and set new standards for professionalism in the accounting profession.”
The event was marked by high-profile speeches and presentations. Keynote speaker, Dr (Prince) Oyebade Oyedepo, FCA, stressed the importance of unity and collaboration within the Institute, which he argued is crucial for ICAN’s continued growth.
Oyebade expressed confidence that Oladipo’s leadership would drive the district toward achieving the Institute’s long-term goals.
Dr. Oyebade, who spoke on the theme: “Breaking Barriers; Expanding Frontiers” discussed various challenges accountants face in their professional duties and provided practical strategies for overcoming obstacles.
He commended Oladipo’s leadership and her potential to inspire change and innovation within the newly established ICAN district.
The event also garnered support from various business leaders, including Mr. Abdulrahaman Yinusa, the Group Managing Director of Oodua Investment Company Limited, who assured attendees of continued corporate backing for ICAN’s initiatives.
The royal presence of HRM Oba Gbadebo Bajowa, represented by a high-powered delegation, added another layer of significance to the occasion.
The Oba, recognizing Oladipo’s contributions to both her profession and community service, appointed her as a member of the Oba in-council of Osooro Kingdom, a gesture that highlighted her influence beyond the accounting profession.
In her remarks, Chief (Mrs.) Oladipo dedicated her career achievements to her husband, Chief Olabode Oladipo, for his unwavering support.
She also promised to ensure that the new district embraces the highest standards of ethical practice, emphasizing that the integrity of the profession would remain central to her leadership approach.
