As part of efforts targeted towards the entrenchment of transparency, inclusivity, and community participation in governance, immediate past Special Assistant on Community Relation to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for his pragmatic approach to governance.
Hon. Josiah who recalled the different phases of democratic development in Oyo state since 1999 lauded Governor Seyi Makinde’s style of leadership. He also commended the governor on what he described as pioneering revolutionary approach to budget planning and implementation.
The former member of Oyo state House of Assembly disclosed on Wednesday (today) while featuring on a Live program on Agidigbo FM radio in Ibadan in commemoration of June 12 set aside as a national day to celebrate democracy in Nigeria.
The radio program was specially designed to examine the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy and democratic governance and to elicit conversations bothering on challenges and possible solutions.
While describing the Governor as a game changer in the Oyo state political landscape, Josiah said Makinde’s foresight, pragmatism, and inclusive approach to governance had set a new standard for democratic governance in Nigeria.
He explained that Governor Makinde remains arguably the first Governor in the whole of the country to directly engage stakeholders at the grassroots across all the geopolitical zones of the state in determining needs of the people as affecting their local communities.
“Makinde’s administration has prioritized inclusivity by actively involving local communities in the decision-making process regarding budget planning, resource allocation and implementation.
“Under this new and innovative framework for governance in the state, Governor Makinde has truly returned power back to the people who now have the opportunity to voice their concerns, propose projects, and participate in the prioritization of development initiatives within their respective communities across the 33 local government areas.
“By empowering citizens to shape the budgetary agenda, Governor Makinde is already promoting a sense of ownership and accountability among the people whose mandate he’s holding in trust.
“Again, the implementation phase of the budget sees continued engagement with communities, ensuring that projects are executed according to the needs and specifications outlined during the planning stages.
“This approach not only enhances the efficiency of resource allocation but also strengthens the bond between government officials and the electorate.” Josiah stated.
He equally emphasized the transformative potential of Makinde’s approach while suggesting that such style could serve as a model for other states across the country if Nigeria indeed is desirous of deepening its evolving democracy.
By decentralizing decision-making processes and promoting grassroots involvement through community engagements, the Governor is already paving the way for a more participatory and responsive form of governance in Nigeria.
He noted that even though the governor like every other human is not infallible making mistakes, he however, hinted that the highly exalted office of the governor has placed heavy responsibility on the governor and as such, the high expectations from the people.
He therefore, called on party leaders, members and the people of Oyo state to rally behind the governor in his sectoral transformation drive under the Omituntun 2.0 sustainable development agenda in order to be able to do more within the time available time frame in the current dispensation.
