The House of Oduduwa has expressed sympathy to the government of Oyo State, the event organizers, and the families of those tragically affected by the stampede at the Ibadan Funfair yesterday.
In a statement released today by the Ooni’s through its Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, the palace expressed its condolences to the government, organizers, and Agidigbo Radio owner, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, as well as the Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS) initiative, founded by Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi, a former queen of the Ooni’s Palace.
Westernmirror.com.ng had earlier reported that the tragic incident, which occurred at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, has left several families mourning the loss of their loved ones, particularly children.
The palace also expressed its shared grief and pain, praying that God grants the bereaved families the fortitude to endure this difficult time.
“We share in the grief and pains that have engulfed the affected families. Our prayers are with them as they bear this trying time.
“We also express our solidarity with the government of Oyo State, especially commending the swift and compassionate response of Mr. Governor,” The statement reads.
The palace emphasized the need for heightened efforts to ensure the safety of children across the country saying: “This tragedy reinforces the urgent need for collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our children.
“It is a reminder of the responsibility we all bear in safeguarding the lives of the young ones in our care.”
Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi, who has previously demonstrated her commitment to children’s welfare through similar charitable events, was also highlighted in the statement.
“While at the Ile Oodua, Ms. Ogunseyi initiated events to support indigent children, showing love and care during the yuletide season.
Despite the tragic outcome, the palace urged the ex queen, Alhaji Hamzat, and others connected with the event to remain committed to their cause.
“Rather than being discouraged by this sorrowful end, we encourage them to continue with such laudable programs for children, but with better plans and strategies for future execution. Let us learn from this incident to improve and prevent future tragedies,” the statement advised.
Furthermore, the palace called for immediate action to prevent future incidents of this nature, stressing the need for strict adherence to safety standards and child welfare policies, especially in events targeting young people.
While calling for reflection and collective responsibility, the palace also expressed concern over the unprofessional conduct of some bloggers and online newspapers who sensationalized the incident.
“The dissemination of unverified and distorted information has compounded the grief of the families and individuals directly affected. We urge media practitioners to exercise restraint, compassion, and professionalism, as their narratives significantly influence public perception and healing,” The palace added.
The palace called for a united approach from all in the state, including government officials, the media, and citizens, to ensure that such incidents never occur again while pledging to continue supporting efforts aimed at bringing solace and healing to those affected.
