The Rivers State House of Assembly has called for calm while rallying support for the new administration in the state under the newly appointed Sole Administrator.
This follows the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu in a move aimed at restoring public peace and orderliness.
In a message addressed to constituents and the people of Rivers State dated 18th of March and obtained today by westernmirror.com.ng, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, attributed the present situation to the actions of the Governor, Similayi Fubara.
He accused Fubara of serially disobeying court judgments and orders, as well as failing to govern in line with his oath of office and the Constitution.
The Speaker further alleged that the Governor’s actions described as “despotic and tyrannical,” including the alleged unconstitutional obstruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly, contributed to the current state of affairs.
Amaewhule acknowledged the gravity of the President’s decision but expressed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting the declaration.
“As an Assembly, we assure you all, our constituents, that we would abide by this declaration even though it is not what we prayed for. Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the country,” he stated.
He called on the people of Rivers State to remain calm and support the newly appointed Sole Administrator, who he said is expected to take charge during this period of emergency.
The Speaker further pledged the Assembly’s cooperation, promising to provide any necessary support to ensure stability in the state.
“We thank you all for your continued support, prayers, and understanding. We expect that you will all give the Sole Administrator the needed support to steer the ship of state during this period of emergency,” Amaewhule concluded.
