The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has asserted that local government (LG) financial autonomy in Nigeria is achievable, provided that existing complexities and ambiguities surrounding it are resolved.
Ogundoyin made this statement during the Oyo South Senatorial District meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held at the Ido Local Government Secretariat in Ibadan.
He emphasized that addressing these issues would improve service delivery, governance, community engagement, and economic development at the local government level.
He also highlighted the need for greater clarity regarding the Concurrent and Exclusive Lists in Nigeria’s Constitution to effectively implement local government financial autonomy.
“Unlocking true local government autonomy will empower communities to better address their needs.
“In Oyo State, we’ve already passed the Administrative Autonomy Bill for Local Governments. It’s crucial that local governments are granted the ability to generate revenue independently.”
In addition, the Speaker urged PDP members to ramp up their membership drives and mobilization efforts.
He equally emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation for the party’s success in upcoming elections.
“Welcome to the Oyo South Senatorial District meeting of our great party here in Ido Local Government Secretariat.
“This gathering is a chance for us to discuss ways to move our senatorial district forward. We must amplify the PDP’s vision and attract new members.
“The numerous achievements of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, across various sectors are a testament to our party’s strength and should help us gain more support in both our Senatorial District and Oyo State.
“However, unity and cooperation within our ranks remain essential for continued success.”
The event was attended by party stakeholders, political officeholders, party executives, and supporters.
