Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced a new partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to support the state’s urban regeneration and new city development initiatives.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page Tuesday morning, the governor revealed that he met with the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Anacláudia Marinheiro Centeno Rossbach, and her team in Nairobi, Kenya.
The meeting, he said, provided an avenue to explore potential areas of collaboration, particularly in light of his administration’s recent establishment of the Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Authority (NTCDA).
“I am happy to report that Oyo State will be getting support from UN-Habitat in the areas of urban regeneration and new city initiative, bridging this with our agribusiness development initiatives,” Makinde stated.
According to him, the collaboration will focus on policy formulation for sustainable urbanisation, which will help the state integrate modern urban planning with economic growth strategies, especially in the agricultural sector.
According to the governor, the Oyo State government’s NTCDA is expected to drive the creation of new urban settlements and the revitalisation of existing communities to align with global best practices for sustainable cities.
