The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for adequate compensation for the victims who lost their lives in the recent mob attack on travelers in Uromi, Edo State.
The caucus also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebhelo, confirmed that about 14 individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on the victims, who were reportedly hunters traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano.
In a statement signed by Kingsley Chinda (Minority Leader), Ali Isa JC (Minority Whip), and Aliyu Sani Madaki (Deputy Minority Leader), the caucus strongly condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for justice.
The statement reads: “It is with extreme shock and grief that we received the news of the barbaric murder of about 16 Nigerians, mainly northerners, by a gang of lawless anarchists in Edo State in the last couple of days.
“We find such brutal killings of innocent Nigerians in any part of the country by lawless mobs highly reprehensible. If left unchecked, such actions could threaten the peace and unity of the nation.
“As such, we, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, condemn this violent attack on the northern travelers, which led to their gruesome deaths.
“We implore all Nigerians never to resort to such jungle justice but to engage the services of lawful authorities whenever they observe any issues of concern.
“We are a nation governed by the rule of law, and our law enforcement agencies are always available to address security concerns in a lawful manner.
“In light of this grave incident, which has already stirred strong emotions across the country, we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice to prevent a recurrence. Additionally, adequate compensation should be provided to the affected families.
“We also urge all Nigerians to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding while allowing both the federal and state governments to address this matter in the interest of justice.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims. The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives remains committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case.”
