As students in both public and private schools prepares ahead of academic resumption, Jericho High School, Eleyele, Ibadan, has raised the alarm over an encroachment of gully erosion and flood threat.
Old students association of the school has therefore, appealed to the Oyo State Government for immediate intervention in fixing the only access road to the school before lives of students are endangered upon resumption back to school.
This was contained in a letter written to the governor and signed by the publicity secretary of the Old Students Association, Mr. Obarotimi Akinbibobola Maitanmi.
According to a copy of the letter obtained by Westernmirror.com.ng on Saturday, September 14, the road has been severely impacted by flooding, which has damaged access road to the school and made it almost impassable.
It stated further that as a result, both students and teachers may face significant challenges when school resumes on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024.
The letter explained further that the school management is particularly concerned about the possibility of unforeseen casualties due to the worsening condition of the access road.
“Heavy rains in recent weeks have further deteriorated the road, leaving parts submerged under water. With the rainy season still ongoing, the situation could become more dangerous if left unaddressed.”
In their plea, the alumnus appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde, relevant Ministries and authorities to act quickly in repairing the road before the resumption of academic activities to prevent avoidable casualty.
They noted that the flooding threatens not only the safety of those accessing the school, but also the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations in the area.
The old Students emphasized that without immediate attention, both students and staff could be forced to navigate hazardous conditions to reach the school premises, which would not only disrupt education but could also put lives at risk.
