The symbolic Torch of Unity arrived in Oyo State on Tuesday, marking a key factor in the countdown to the Ogun 2025 National Sports Festival and reinforcing the ideals of peace, unity, and national integration.

The Torch, a significant emblem of the forthcoming festival tagged “Gateway 2025,” was received at the entrance of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, by Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal on behalf of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde.

The event attracted athletes, officials, and state sports leaders, all celebrating the shared spirit the torch represents.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Makinde, represented by his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, highlighted the symbolic weight of the Torch, noting that it transcends ceremony.

“It is a powerful symbol of peace, unity and brotherhood across the 36 states of our great country,” he stated.

Receiving the Torch, according to the governor, was both an honour and a reaffirmation of Oyo State’s dedication to national cohesion and socio-cultural integration through sports.

“This moment serves not just as a prelude to a sporting event but as a call to unity and shared national identity,” Makinde added.

The National Sports Festival, scheduled to hold from May 13 to 24, 2025, promises to be a platform not just for competition, but for fostering inter-state camaraderie.

The governor charged Oyo athletes to rise above participation and aim for excellence, urging them to serve as ambassadors of sportsmanship and unity.

Governor Makinde also reaffirmed his administration’s ongoing support for sports development, pledging continued investment in infrastructure and training while recognising those who bring honour to the state.

In his words: “We will continue to recognise and reward excellence in sports.”

The event was attended by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, as well as top officials from the Oyo State Sports Council.
