Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a resignation letter dated June 27, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Otukpo Ward 1, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, the two-term Senate President cited deepening divisions, persistent leadership crises, and irreconcilable differences within the party as the reasons for his departure.
“I write to formally inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect.
“You may recall that over the years, I have remained firm and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP.
“Even when nearly all stakeholders departed the party following our loss in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing,” Senator Mark said.
Senator Mark, who served as President of the 6th and 7th Senate and was widely known for his loyalty and consistency within the PDP, also highlighted his efforts in rebuilding and repositioning the party in the aftermath of its 2015 electoral defeat.
In his words: “I have worked steadfastly to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party, efforts which, without sounding immodest, helped restore the PDP to national relevance and made it once again a party of choice for many Nigerians.”
However, the political elder statesman lamented the current state of the party, noting that it had been reduced to “a shadow of its former self” and had become “subject to public ridicule.”
Following his resignation, Senator Mark revealed that he would be aligning with the newly emerging National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, a group positioning itself as a credible alternative to existing political structures.
“After wide consultations with my family, friends, and political associates, I have resolved to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, as part of the collective effort to rescue our nation and preserve our hard-earned democracy,” he declared.
Senator David Mark, a retired Brigadier General, served in the Senate from 1999 to 2019, becoming one of the longest-serving senators in Nigerian history.
Meanwhile, westernmirror.com.ng had earlier reported that the Senator has been appointed as the interim national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His appointment followed a marathon meeting and final resolution of opposition party leaders in Abuja on Tuesday, July 1 where former Governor of Osun state and Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola was also appointed as the interim national secretary of ADC.
