The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has reaffirmed the commitment of state legislatures to strengthening institutional frameworks and prioritizing climate-related financing in Nigeria.
Ogundoyin, in a Facebook post on his official page on Wednesday, disclosed that the two-day meeting of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures which held in Abuja rounded off with far-reaching deliberations on environmental and governance reforms.
“The conversations were rich, the ideas bold, and the commitment from my fellow Speakers are unwavering,” the Speaker wrote.
According to him, one of the key highlights of the conference was exploring how climate finance could be meaningfully integrated into state budgeting processes.
He stressed that environmental priorities such as flood control, erosion management, and clean energy must no longer be sidelined but placed at the heart of legislative agendas.
The Speaker also noted that the conference devoted time to discussing ways to strengthen the independence and internal systems of State Houses of Assembly, a move he described as central to the growth of Nigeria’s democracy.
“I am proud of the collaborative spirit that defined this meeting. Together, we have laid the groundwork for clear, actionable steps towards improving our legislative institutions,” he added.
He further expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Conference of Speakers and partner organizations such as PACE, PLAC, DAI, and the FCDO, for their insightful presentations and consistent support in strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
