The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind the Ambassador Iliya Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC), reaffirming that the party remains united and focused as it heads towards its elective national convention in Ibadan.
This is coming on the heels of the internal crisis that have ravaged the party in the last couple of days with two factions now laying claim to the leadership of the NWC.
This follows an Abuja High Court ruling which stopped the PDP from going ahead with its national Convention citing non compliance with guidelines and breach of process. The court ruling which favors national officials loyal to the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike was soon met with another court ruling in Ibadan on Tuesday, giving the party the nod to proceed with its planned convention in Ibadan, slated for November 16 and 17.
Rising from an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the BoT described the PDP as a “formidable and resilient” political organization under Damagum’s leadership.
It also commended the NWC, the PDP Governors’ Forum, and the National Convention Organizing Committee for what it called their “collective roles in stabilizing the party” ahead of the upcoming convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Oyo State’s capital.
In a communiqué presented by its Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara on Wednesday, the BoT welcomed the recent ruling of the Oyo State High Court which affirmed the party’s constitutional right to conduct its internal affairs including holding its national convention as planned.
The ruling, the BoT noted, represents “a victory for democracy, rule of law, and political development in Nigeria.”
However, the Board expressed concern over recent internal frictions and the invasion of the party’s national secretariat, describing such incidents as “regrettable and inconsistent with the PDP’s values and character.”
“As the conscience of the party, the BoT cannot and will not take sides,” the communiqué stated. “Our duty is to safeguard the integrity of the PDP and promote dialogue over discord. Reconciliation is not a weakness; it is an act of maturity and responsibility.”
To that end, the BoT announced the formation of a high-powered Reconciliation Committee tasked with mending divisions within the party ahead of the convention.
The committee, chaired by Ambassador Hassan Adamu from the North East, has Chief Mike Oghiadomhe (South South) as secretary, alongside Chief Ugochukwu Okeke (South East), Senator Zaynab Kure (North Central), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (South West), and Dr. Lubna Mohammed Gusau (North West).
The committee is expected to report back to the BoT by Tuesday, November 11, 2025, for further action.
