A former Commissioner of Police in Lagos and Benue states, Fatai Owoseni, has distanced himself from suggestions that he is a political disciple or loyalist.
The governorship aspirant ahead of 2027 general elections, insisted that his allegiance has always been to the Nigerian Constitution and the people.
Owoseni, who recently resigned his appointment as Special Adviser on Security to the Oyo State governor and Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, made the clarification while speaking on Gbangbalasata, a political programme aired on Splash FM.
The retired police commissioner, who is now aspiring to contest the 2027 governorship election under the platform of the Accord Party, said although he shares a cordial relationship with Makinde, he cannot describe himself as the governor’s political follower.
According to him, the concept of discipleship belongs to religious teachings and should not be imported into politics.
“The word disciple came from spiritual books, the Bible and the Quran. You hear about disciples of Jesus and disciples of Prophet Mohammed.
“I can’t say I’m a disciple of Seyi Makinde and I can’t say I’m his follower,” Owoseni stated.
The former police boss stressed that his years in public service shaped him to operate independently and uphold professional ethics rather than personal loyalty to individuals in power.
“I’m Fatai Owoseni and Fatai Owoseni is Fatai Owoseni. I spent 35 years in public service and overcame several temptations and challenges in police work,” he said.
Owoseni explained that throughout his career in the Nigeria Police Force, his duty was primarily to the constitution and the Nigerian people, regardless of who occupied leadership positions.
“You cannot say I’m a disciple of an Inspector-General of Police or even the President. My obligation has always been to the Constitution of Nigeria and the people,” he added.
Despite rejecting the label of political disciple, Owoseni maintained that there is no rift between him and Governor Makinde, describing their relationship as cordial and longstanding.
“I have known Governor Makinde since 2019. We are brothers and friends and our family houses are close to each other,” he said.
The governorship aspirant also reiterated that his political ambition is driven by a desire to contribute to the development of Oyo State and not by personal battles or political supremacy.
He added that successive administrations in the state, including Makinde’s government, had played significant roles in transforming Oyo State.
He noted however, that he also hopes to contribute his quota if given the opportunity.
