The deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took yet another fresh turn on Monday as the party’s suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, formally wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), notifying it of the appointment of Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman.
This is coming hours after security sealed of the Wadata national Secretariat and the Legacy House of the PDP in Abuja following fears of escalating tension between the two factions.
In the letter dated November 3, 2025, and acknowledged as received by INEC the same day, Anyanwu informed the commission that Mohammed, who currently serves as the PDP Vice Chairman for the North Central zone, had been appointed to replace the suspended National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum.
The correspondence, titled “Resolutions of the PDP NWC Meeting,” stated that the decision followed a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on November 1, 2025.
Anyanwu maintained that the appointment was in line with the provisions of the PDP constitution and urged the electoral umpire to recognize Mohammed in his new capacity.
“This appointment is in accordance with the party’s constitution and we kindly request that all necessary steps be taken to recognize him in his new capacity,” the letter read in part.
The development adds a fresh layer to the already volatile situation within the PDP, which has been engulfed in leadership tussles and counter-suspensions over the last few weeks.
The internal struggle reached a fever pitch after the suspension of Damagum and several key NWC members on allegations of gross misconduct, a decision that has sharply divided the party’s hierarchy.
While a faction loyal to Damagum insists that his suspension is invalid and that he remains the legitimate national chairman, another group, now backing Mohammed, argues that the party cannot move forward without firm leadership and adherence to its internal laws.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the embattled Acting National chairman, Ambassador Damagum, nor the INEC leadership has issued an official response to the letter.
