Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the country but to remain committed to its progress and be prepared to use their votes to determine the kind of leadership they want.
Makinde gave the charge at the 60th Anniversary (Diamond Jubilee) celebration of Jah Jehovah Jireh (C&S) Church, held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Jah Jehovah Jireh (C&S) Church, Elewura Link, Ibadan.
The governor, who was represented at the event by his Special Assistant on Interfaith Affairs, Rev. Femi Ibikunle, urged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the difficulties confronting the nation.
Speaking on the theme of the anniversary, “Moving into New Territory,” with reference to Isaiah 54:2, Makinde said the current challenges facing the country should not make citizens abandon hope in its future.
He stressed the importance of citizens participating actively in the democratic process, particularly during elections, saying the power to determine the direction of the country ultimately resides with the people through their votes.
According to him, Nigerians must not surrender their civic responsibility to apathy, frustration or political indifference, but should be ready to make informed choices whenever they are called upon to elect their representatives.
The governor urged the people to see the country’s challenges as a call for collective responsibility and renewed commitment to nation-building.
He also congratulated the church on attaining 60 years of existence, describing the milestone as a testament to its resilience, faith and contributions to the spiritual and social development of its members and the wider society.
Makinde commended the leadership and members of the church for sustaining its legacy over the decades, while encouraging them to continue promoting peace, unity, love and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.
He said the theme, “Moving into New Territory,” was particularly significant as it represented the need for individuals, institutions and the nation to look beyond present limitations and work towards a better future.
The governor further called on religious institutions to continue playing their role in promoting good citizenship, peaceful coexistence and responsible participation in governance.
Earlier, the church leadership expressed appreciation to God for sustaining the congregation over the past six decades and governor Makinde for deepening peaceful coexistence among all faiths in the state.
Gen. Pro. Dr. Gideon Oluwale (JP), in his sermon, noted that the anniversary was not only a celebration of longevity but also an opportunity to reflect on the church’s journey and envision greater accomplishments in the years ahead.
The 60th anniversary celebration had in attendance church members, religious leaders, government representatives and other dignitaries to commemorate the milestone.
