The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected kidnappers and recovered firearms in what it described as a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on violent crimes across the state.
The arrests followed what the police said were intelligence-driven and coordinated operations carried out in collaboration with local security outfits.
In a statement on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command disclosed that one of the suspects, Aliu Umaru, of Komu Village in Itesiwaju Local Government Area, was apprehended after being declared wanted in connection with the kidnapping of a 25-year-old woman, Huseinat Abubakar, from Gelede Camp via Komu.
According to the police, Umaru’s arrest was based on credible intelligence. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime and subsequently led operatives to the arrest of two other alleged members of the kidnapping syndicate identified as Gure Wadi, 60, and Ibrahim Yobo, 35, both residents of Komu Village.
The statement added that a search conducted at the residence of one of the suspects led to the recovery of a single-barrel gun and a dane gun, believed to have been used in carrying out the kidnapping.
Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, directed that efforts be intensified to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang and ensure they are brought to justice.
He commended the officers involved in the operation for what he described as their professionalism, courage and operational effectiveness.
Haruna also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his leadership and continued support, which he said has strengthened operational capacity within the Command.
The police boss further acknowledged the support of residents and non-state security partners whose timely information contributed to the success of the operation.
The Command said investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of inquiries.
It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies.
