The Oyo State Police Command has detained two of its officers following the death of a 25-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Umar Yahúza, in Iseyin, in an incident that has sparked public concern and protest.
According to a statement on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident occurred in the early hours of May 2, 2026, at about 5:30 a.m., at a Border Patrol checkpoint located at Niko along the Iseyin/Oyo Road.
The Command described the incident as a lone motorcycle accident involving the deceased, who was said to be a resident of the Oluwole area in Old Kara, Iseyin.
The Police the deceased was immediately rescued and rushed to Fadok Hospital for treatment but was later confirmed dead at about 7:30 a.m. as a result of injuries sustained.
However, the development triggered a reaction from fellow commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as ‘Okada’ riders, who gathered in front of the hospital in a peaceful protest.
The protesters alleged that police personnel stationed at the checkpoint were responsible for the accident that led to Yahúza’s death.
In response to the allegations, the Police Command said senior officers, alongside the Seriki of the Hausa/Fulani community in the area, engaged the protesters and assured them that a thorough and discreet investigation would be carried out.
“The Command wishes to assure members of the public that any officer found culpable will be sanctioned in accordance with the law,” the statement noted.
The police confirmed that two officers—an Assistant Superintendent of Police and an Inspector attached to the Border Patrol Unit—have since been detained pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Investigators have also visited the scene of the incident, where photographic evidence was collected and a sketch map prepared to aid further inquiry.
At the request of the family and community leaders, the remains of the deceased were released to the Seriki of the Hausa community for burial in line with Islamic rites.
The Command added that the situation in Iseyin has been brought under control, with normalcy restored, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a more detailed probe.
The Commissioner of Police however, reiterated the Command’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and justice, urging residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
