The Oyo State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old suspect in connection with an alleged case of defilement involving a 17-year-old girl in Ilero, Oyo State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement obtained by westernmirror.com.ng on Friday.
Confirming the development, the Command said the arrest was effected by operatives of the Ilero Divisional Police Headquarters following a prompt report by concerned parties.
“The suspect was apprehended in connection with a case of defilement involving a minor,” the police said, noting that the report enabled officers to respond swiftly and prevent further harm.
According to the statement, upon receiving the complaint, operatives immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area, and rescued the victim.
She was thereafter taken to a medical facility where she received medical attention and psychosocial support in line with established protocols.
The Command added that the suspect was arrested without delay and is cooperating with investigators. “The suspect is currently in custody and has been assisting the police with ongoing investigations,” the statement read.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Gender Desk, for thorough handling.
“The Command has zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence,” Haruna said.
“Cases of this nature will be investigated comprehensively, and anyone found culpable will be charged to court and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
He further assured residents of the Command’s resolve to protect vulnerable persons, stressing that “Oyo State will not, and will never, be a safe haven for perpetrators of sexual offences.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, also urged members of the public to remain vigilant.
“Parents, guardians, and community leaders are encouraged to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation,” he said, adding that early reporting remains critical to effective intervention.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of residents and sustaining efforts to combat sexual and gender-based violence across the state.
