Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on residents and stakeholders to prepare for a grand celebration as the state marks its 50th anniversary.
The governor said the golden jubilee offers not just a reason to celebrate but also an opportunity to reflect on Oyo’s journey, its progress, and the people who have built its legacy.
Makinde made the call on Wednesday while inaugurating the 11-member Oyo State at 50 Anniversary Planning Committee at the Executive Council Chamber, Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
The committee, chaired by former House of Representatives member, Hon. Saheed Akinade Fijabi, also includes former Head of Service, Alhaja Ololade Agboola, as Deputy Chairperson, and Mrs Ronke Adedayo as Secretary.
Other members are Dr Z.O. Ajuwon (OON), Mr Mustapha Rasaq Areo, Alhaja Fatimah Ololade Azeez, Mr S.A. Adejumo, Pastor John Olasunkanmi Alabi, Alhaji Gafar Bello, retired Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni, and Mr Samuel Adegboyega Badejo.
In his address, Governor Makinde said Oyo State had reached a defining milestone in its evolution and history.
“Fifty years is a major landmark, whether in the life of an individual, an institution, or a state,” he said.
“When you get to 50, you shouldn’t misbehave. So, I believe it calls for celebration. Even in the face of national challenges, let’s roll out the drums and celebrate this major milestone of our state.”
The governor emphasized that the anniversary would be inclusive and non-partisan. “From the composition of this committee, you will see that there is no PDP or APC.
We don’t do that here in Oyo State,” he said. “Look at the chairman—we fought in 2019 and we defeated him then, but when it comes to doing things for the good of Oyo, we go for competence, not political affiliation. Parties will come and go, but our state will remain.”
He also paid tribute to some members of the committee for their continued service to the state, describing former Head of Service, Alhaja Agboola, as an example of selfless dedication. “When you retire and you are not tired, what do we do? We call you back,” he said, smiling.
Makinde explained that the golden jubilee would highlight the state’s achievements across all sectors while honoring past leaders, both living and late, who contributed to its development.
“We must use this opportunity to recognise those who have governed Oyo State and those who served it with distinction. If they are no longer with us, we should reach out to their families.
“Every administration faced its own challenges, but they all gave their best. This celebration must appreciate that history,” he said.
The governor tasked the committee with identifying individuals who have made the state proud, both at home and beyond.
“Scan the horizon,” he urged. “Wherever you find people who have brought honour to Oyo, bring them up for recognition. Let’s showcase what we’ve achieved in 50 years, and thank the people who made it happen.”
The event drew an audience of notable individuals, including former First Lady of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Ladoja; former Deputy Governors Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja and Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi; the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi (representing the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin); and Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Justice M.O. Olagunju.
Also in attendance were the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo; Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni; Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Kazim Adeniyi; and members of the state executive council.
Others present included the Senior Executive Assistant to the Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal; Chairman of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Dr Saka Balogun; and Chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairmen, Hon. Sikiru Oyedele Sanda.
