The Special Assistant to Oyo State Governor on Interfaith Affairs, Rev. Femi Ibikunle, has called for renewed commitment to peace, tolerance, and unity in the state regardless of political or ethnic affiliations.
The governor’s aide stressed that genuine economic growth is unattainable without social harmony among all faiths and ethnicities resident in the state.
The call comes as a commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Peace, which is celebrated globally on September 21.
Westernmirror.com.ng reports that International Peace Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, is set aside to promote peace, non-violence, and global unity.
According to a statement on Sunday, Rev. Ibikunle emphasized that peace is not only a moral or spiritual obligation but also a catalyst for sustainable development.
He explained that when communities coexist peacefully, investors feel more confident, businesses thrive, and governments can focus resources on infrastructure and innovation rather than conflict resolution.
He said the commitment of the present administration under governor Seyi Makinde occasioned for the peaceful coexistence among the three religions in the state while the tranquility has birthed various infrastructural and socio-economic development across key sectors.
“Togetherness is the foundation upon which prosperous societies are built. Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has continually championed inclusivity and interfaith understanding because we recognize that peace is a prerequisite for economic development.
“Where there is mistrust, rancor, or division, development becomes stunted and for this reason, we as a government , will continue to prioritize peace and harmonious coexistence in all of our policies and programs,” Rev’d Ibikunle said.
The Special Assistant also commended religious leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society organizations in Oyo State for consistently supporting dialogue and promoting mutual respect among diverse groups.
He urged them to continue playing active roles in deepening peace at the community level, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.
Highlighting this year’s global theme, “Partnerships for Peace: Building Bridges for the Future,” Ibikunle reiterated the importance of collaboration across social, ethnic, and religious divides.
He added that the Makinde-led government would sustain programs that promote youth engagement, community integration, and poverty reduction, all of which reduce the tendencies of conflict.
He also revealed that plans are already underway for a grand celebration of the 2025 International Peace Day in Oyo State, to be jointly organized by adherents of the three major religions in the state; Christianity, Islam, and traditional faiths.
This, he said will further demonstrate the government’s resolve to strengthen unity across faith lines.
Ibikunle however, charged all Nigerian resident in Oyo state to see peace as everyone’s responsibility.
In his words: “Our diversity should be our strength, not a source of conflict. If we walk together in unity, we will not only secure peace but also unlock the doors of economic prosperity.”
