Elected officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
They praised Makinde’s administration and leadership as well as his developmental strides and commitment to the welfare of the masses, workers and pensioners across the state regardless of the current economic realities in the country.
The endorsement formed part of the resolutions reached at a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday, March 8, at Iyaganku area of Ibadan.
The meeting brought together PDP elected representatives across different tiers of government, alongside key party leaders and stakeholders, to review the progress of governance under the PDP administration and deliberate on political developments within the party.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and read by the Oyo State Chairman of the PDP, Dayo Ogungbenro, stakeholders said the gathering also focused on strengthening internal cohesion and reaffirming collective commitment to the unity and continued success of the party in the state.
After what participants described as extensive deliberations and constructive contributions, the stakeholders unanimously commended Governor Makinde for the prudent management of the state’s resources and his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.
They particularly praised the administration for prioritising the welfare of workers and pensioners through the regular and prompt payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities.
The stakeholders noted that the administration had cleared a backlog of gratuities inherited from previous governments amounting to over ₦36 billion.
They also lauded the governor’s assurance that all gratuities accruing during his tenure would be fully settled before the end of his administration, thereby ensuring that no outstanding liabilities would be transferred to the next government.
On infrastructure development, the stakeholders highlighted the ongoing construction of the Ibadan Circular Road project as well as the upgrade of Ladoke Akintola Airport to international standard.
According to them, the projects are expected to open up new economic corridors, stimulate investment opportunities and drive unprecedented economic growth and development across Oyo State.
During the deliberations, stakeholders also discussed internal challenges affecting some geopolitical zones and local government areas within the party.
The meeting, however, assured party members that deliberate steps would be taken to resolve the already identified internal challenges and ensure sustained harmony across all zones and local government areas.
Reaffirming the unity and strength of the party, the stakeholders urged leaders and members to continue working together in harmony while placing the collective interest of the PDP above individual ambitions.
In preparation for the 2027 general elections, the meeting resolved that all elected officials and stakeholders would remain united under the umbrella of the PDP and work collectively to ensure the party’s continued success in Oyo State.
Those in attendance included members of the House of Representatives; Adedeji Stanley Olajide (Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency), Anthony Adebayo Adepoju, (Ibarapa Central/North Federal Constituency), Oyeshina Najimdeen Oyedeji,(Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency), and Sunday Makanjuola, (Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency), and Folajimi Oyekunle, representing Ibadan North federal Constituency at the green chamber of the National Assembly.
The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, led all PDP members in the Assembly to the meeting, while the state party chairman, Ogungbenro, led members of the State Executive Committee, the State Working Committee, local government party executives, as well as the 33 local government chairmen and party chairmen across the state to the gathering.
Participants however, renewed pledge by all elected officials and party leaders to uphold the ideals of unity, discipline, loyalty and service to the people while continuing to support the Makinde administration in delivering more dividends of democracy to the people of Oyo State.
