The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 40-year-old man following an attack on a group of people welcoming Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat back to Ibadan, the state capital.
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the group left Molete while proceeding towards Iwo Road, where the Agidigbo FM office is located.
This was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.
Olayinka said the incident was reported to the police on October 14, 2026, by Kehinde Samuel Ibikunle.
The statement identified the deceased as Azeez Tajudeen, a native of Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, who sustained a severe injury to his right eye during the attack.
He was rushed to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where he was examined and confirmed dead. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue.
The police said the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, had directed the transfer of the case to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
While investigations are ongoing, the command urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the police at least 48 hours before any planned procession or public gathering to enable adequate security arrangements and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The police also appealed to members of the public with credible information that could assist the investigation to come forward and cooperate with investigators.
