Former lawmaker and influential Oyo political figure, Senator Hosea Ayoola Agboola, has formally resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Agboola, who represented Oyo North in the National Assembly and has long been a key pillar within the PDP structure in Oyo State, confirmed his resignation in a letter addressed to the party leadership on Friday.
His exit effectively brings to a close a long and eventful chapter in his political journey with the PDP, a party under which he rose to national prominence.
Contrary to widespread speculation that the former senator was headed to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to spearhead its expansion in the state, reliable sources close to Agboola have told Westernmirror.com.ng that he is, in fact, joining the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It had been an open secret within Oyo’s political circles that Agboola, popularly known as “Hallelujah,” had distanced himself from PDP activities since after the 2023 general elections.
Many had already concluded that he and his loyalists were preparing to pitch their tent with yet another party, yet to be disclosed.
Interestingly, this development comes at a time when some national PDP figures including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Senate President David Mark are reportedly adopting the ADC as an alternative platform for opposition politics ahead of 2027.
According to a source close to the former senator, Agboola’s defection was sealed after “a mutual understanding and agreement” with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.
The two men are said to have held “a number of strategic meetings” over recent weeks, culminating in a decision to form a united front within the APC in preparation for the 2027 elections.
“Everything has been agreed,” the insider said. “The senator and his followers are moving into the APC. It’s no longer a matter of if, but when he chooses to make the formal declaration for his next political party.”
Although Agboola has not yet made a public announcement confirming his new political home, those in his inner circle insist the matter is already settled.
Earlier in his resignation letter, Agboola expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it provided him over the years but hinted that his decision was driven by “future political pursuit.”
“I, Senator Hosea Ayoola Agboola, a member of the People’s Democratic Party and a leader both at the state and national level, appreciate the party for the opportunities afforded me to serve as a member and leader, as well as for the achievements made therein.
“However, you will observe that I did not participate in all the congresses held recently, i.e., local and state congress, due to future political pursuit which is necessary at this material time.
“Consequently, I hereby resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party effective from 10 October 2025, as I wish the party success in its activities.”
Though Agboola’s departure did not entirely come as a surprise, given his growing distance from PDP activities in recent months, its timing and its alignment with Adelabu’s renewed governorship ambition now adds a new layer of intrigue to Oyo State’s political landscape.
Adelabu, who recently declared his intention to run for governor again under the APC, has been working with party stakeholders to consolidate his base across the state’s major political blocs.
The addition of Agboola, a seasoned grassroots mobilizer with deep influence in Oke-Ogun, is seen as a major boost to that effort.
While the PDP has yet to issue an official response, insiders within the party privately describe Agboola’s exit as “a loss that was long anticipated but still regrettable.”
If confirmed, his defection would mark another major shift in the buildup to 2027, as Oyo politics once again enters a season of realignments and recalculations.
