The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has elected Kabiru Turaki as the new national chairman of the party.
His emergence followed an election at the party’s national Convention held in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Saturday, November 15.
The two days exercise slated for 15 and 16 of November is still ongoing at the Adamasingba stadium, venue of the convention.
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, is a former minister and one-time presidential aspirant in Nigeria.
Turaki’s emergence came with little drama. Delegates at the national convention in Ibadan filed to the voting stand, already aware of the quiet consensus that had formed around him.
By the time voting ended, he had secured 1,516 votes. He stood alone on the ballot after Lado Dan Marke, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Katsina, stepped down earlier in the day.
That withdrawal sealed what many insiders had described as an “unwritten understanding” to allow the party move forward with a unified voice.
His election has officially marked the end of the Damagum era, which party members often described as transitional.
Now the PDP enters a new phase under a chairman whose task is anything but small. He inherits a party working to reclaim lost ground nationally while keeping its diverse blocs aligned.
