The Turaki Adinni of Oyo State, Engr. Abdul-Jelil Mogaji Adanla, has berated the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) led by Professor Isihaq Akintola over his comments on the coming coronation of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.
He cautioned the group against making inciteful statements capable of disturbing the religious peace enjoyed in Oyo State stating that MURIC does not have the right to portray itself as the mouthpiece of Muslim community.
MURIC had on Saturday alleged that the coronation of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, was deliberately delayed by Governor Seyi Makinde, thereby preventing Muslims from attending Jumu’ah prayers.
Reacting to the claims on Sunday, Adanla, who served as Vice Chairman of Security committee during the coronation, described the allegations as baseless and misleading.
He clarified that Governor Makinde did not in any way hinder Muslims from observing their Friday prayers.
“The delay on the coronation day was due to the traditional rites preceding the handing over of the staff of office, which is a responsibility vested in the Governor,” Adanla explained.
“Governor Makinde was ready to arrive earlier but was advised to wait until the traditional protocols were completed. It would have been improper for him to mount an empty podium.”
He further noted that a mosque was located within walking distance of the venue, making it possible for Muslims to attend prayers without obstruction.
Adanla stressed that Governor Makinde has consistently promoted religious tolerance and harmony in Oyo State.
He cited the recognition of the Islamic New Year as a public holiday in the state as one of several gestures demonstrating fairness to the Muslim community.
“It is uncharitable for anyone to accuse a governor who has shown so much regard for Muslims of deliberately preventing them from prayers,” Adanla said.
The Turaki Adinni expressed disappointment at MURIC’s approach, accusing the organization of attempting to sow discord among Christians and Muslims in the state through what he called inciteful remarks.
“Stop acting like a Sheriff over us. You’re promoting a hidden agenda. As a professor, you should know how to do your findings before jumping to conclusions. It’s a sin.”
Adanla urged MURIC to desist from what he described as “reckless commentary” and instead focus on constructive criticism that can strengthen interfaith relations.
“He accused the group of pursuing a hidden agenda aimed at tarnishing the image of Governor Makinde’s administration.
Adanla however, appealed to religious leaders and groups to tread carefully in their public statements, emphasizing the need to preserve the peace and unity that Ibadan and Oyo State are known for.
“Governor Makinde did not arrive late. It was the coronation committee that ensured traditional protocols were observed before he entered the venue.
“MURIC’s allegations are unfair and inciteful, and they do not reflect the true events of the day,” he insisted.
