As part of renewed efforts to engender and strengthen professionalism within Oyo State’s education sector, the Leader of the House, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin (Ogbomoso South), has called for decisive measures to tackle rising cases of indiscipline among teachers and non-teaching staff in public primary and secondary schools.
Presenting a motion during Tuesday’s plenary, Adedoyin expressed deep concern over what he described as a growing culture of laxity and misconduct among some school personnel.
He noted that such behavior, if left unchecked, could undermine years of progress and investment in the state’s education system.
The House identified a range of common offenses among school staff, including absenteeism, habitual lateness, failure to prepare lesson notes, refusal to comply with posting instructions, incomplete school records such as diaries and report cards, and involvement in examination malpractices.
Lawmakers in their separate submissions during the plenary warned that these acts threaten the very foundation of the educational system and diminish the government’s sustained efforts to improve standards and learning outcomes.
The motion acknowledged Governor Seyi Makinde’s notable strides in the education sector, particularly the recent approval for the procurement and distribution of tablets and laptops to teachers, as well as continuous training and retraining programs aimed at improving capacity and motivation.
However, the House expressed concern that weak monitoring and poor supervision by relevant agencies have allowed a number of teachers and non-teaching staff to disregard civil service rules.
Some reportedly abandon their duty posts, engage in private businesses during school hours, or display outright misconduct.
Adedoyin, alongside his co-sponsors, stressed the need for immediate and firm intervention to prevent further deterioration of discipline in the school system.
They urged the Ministry of Education, the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to strengthen supervision and ensure strict compliance with professional ethics.
The motion also called for prompt investigation and disciplinary action against erring staff to serve as a deterrent to others, insisting that lateness and absenteeism must attract appropriate sanctions in line with civil service regulations.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly commended Adedoyin and his colleagues for raising a vital issue affecting the integrity of public education.
He emphasized that teachers remain the backbone of any society and must uphold values that reflect dedication, discipline, and responsibility.
“Government has invested heavily in teacher empowerment through recruitment, training, and digital tools.
“But these efforts must be complemented by professionalism and accountability. No teacher or public servant entrusted with shaping the minds of our children should neglect their duties or compromise standards.
“This House will continue to champion policies that promote excellence and ensure our schools remain true centers of learning.”
The motion was unanimously supported, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to restoring discipline and efficiency across Oyo State’s public schools.
