The Trade Union Congress, TUC, Oyo State Council has congratulated The Guardian correspondent, Mr Rotimi Agboluaje, on his election as Secretary of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council.
Agboluaje emerged victorious at the chapel election held on Tuesday at its secretariat in Mokola, Ibadan, after polling 31 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr Musliudeen Adebayo of Daily Post, who secured 10 votes.
The election also produced Mr Yinka Adeniran of The Nation as Chairman, who equally polled 31 votes.
Mr Remi Koleosho was elected Vice Chairman, while Mr Sheu Sulaiman of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, emerged as Treasurer. Both were returned unopposed.
The exercise was conducted by a three member electoral committee led by Pastor Ola Ajayi and was monitored by officials of the NUJ, Oyo State Council, including the State Council Chairman, Comrade Akeem Abas.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Secretary, Comrade Babatunde Balogun, the TUC described Agboluaje’s emergence as well deserved, attributing it to his professionalism, dedication and integrity in the practice of journalism.
The congress said the election result reflected the confidence and respect he enjoys among his colleagues within the Correspondents’ Chapel.
“His integrity and competence are exemplary and represent the finest values of the journalism profession.
“We are confident that he will contribute meaningfully to strengthening the standards and operations of the Correspondents’ Chapel during his tenure,” the statement said.
The TUC further wished Agboluaje a successful and impactful tenure as he takes on the new responsibility, while expressing optimism that the newly elected executive would advance unity and professionalism within the chapel.
The congress congratulated all members of the new executive council and urged them to work collectively in the interest of the union and the journalism profession in Oyo State.
