Former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kazeem Babatunde, popularly known as “Arole,” has paid a heartfelt tribute to the immediate past Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, six years after his passing.
He described the former governor as a visionary leader whose impact on governance and political development in the state remains enduring.
Ajimobi, who served as governor of Oyo State between 2011 and 2019, died on June 25, 2020, at the age of 70 following complications from COVID-19.
In a statement made on Thursday, Arole said the late governor’s legacy continues to resonate across Oyo State through the infrastructural projects, institutional reforms and leadership standards he introduced during his administration.
According to him, Ajimobi’s tenure marked a turning point in the state’s political and developmental trajectory, noting that his administration restored public confidence in governance and laid foundations that subsequent governments have continued to build upon.
“Six years after his departure, the memory of Senator Abiola Ajimobi remains alive in our hearts and that of many people across Oyo State and beyond.
“Ajimobi remains the first governor in Oyo State’s history to complete two consecutive terms in office, a feat that cemented his place in the state’s political history and continues to shape conversations about leadership and governance in the state.
“He was indeed a courageous leader, a reformer and a statesman who dedicated his life to the service of humanity, and built other political leaders before his passing,” Arole stated.
The former lawmaker said Ajimobi demonstrated uncommon political courage by confronting difficult governance challenges and pursuing policies aimed at restoring order, improving infrastructure and strengthening public institutions.
He noted that beyond politics, the late governor was a mentor to many young leaders and public servants, offering guidance and opportunities that helped shape the careers of numerous individuals within and outside the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Arole further described Ajimobi as a bridge-builder who believed in merit, excellence and inclusive leadership, adding that his contributions to the political evolution of Oyo State would remain a reference point for generations to come.
“His commitment to peace, development and good governance earned him respect across political divides. Though he is no longer with us, his ideals and achievements continue to inspire many of us in public service,” he said.
The former legislator urged political leaders and public office holders to emulate the virtues of integrity, discipline and dedication to public welfare which, according to him, defined Ajimobi’s years in office.
He also prayed for the continued repose of the late governor’s soul and for strength for members of the Ajimobi family, associates and supporters who continue to cherish his memory.
