Mathias Gotwen and Charity Agbofure on Sunday emerged champions of the 12th edition of the Splash FM Ibadan City Marathon, which returned with pomp after a four-year hiatus, thrilling thousands of residents across the ancient city.
Gotwen outpaced his rivals to clinch the men’s 42.19km race in 2 hours, 35 minutes, 24 seconds, walking away with the grand prize of ₦1.2 million, while Agbofure topped the women’s race in 3 hours, 00 minutes, 07 seconds to claim ₦800,000.
The race, which kicked off at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, was organised by West Midland Communications, owners of Splash FM and Lagelu FM, with support from the Oyo State Government and other corporate partners.
In the men’s 42.19km category, Friday Yohama finished second in 2:35:31, winning ₦500,000, while Iliya Dang came third in 2:37:32 to bag ₦300,000.
Nyago Boyi and Dang Ahmadi placed fourth and fifth, received ₦200,000 and ₦150,000 respectively.
For the women, Elizabeth Nuhu came second in 3:08:43 to win ₦400,000, while Erinle Olude Fadekemi crossed the line in 3:18:42 to clinch ₦200,000.
The 5km mini-marathon also produced thrills. Abubakar Ayomide claimed first place in the men’s division with a time of 37:49:09, ahead of Alabi Olusegun (37:56:40).
Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, made a surprise entry, finishing third in 38:25:07, followed by Ajayi Muritala (40:37:50) and Enoch Chukwu (43:54:00).
Speaking after the race, Sowore said:
“Running alongside young Nigerians here in Ibadan is proof that sports is a unifier. This marathon represents the resilience of our people, and I’m glad to be part of it.”
In the women’s 5km race, Adebayo Fathia emerged winner in 39:22:07, while Ojo Anuoluwa (40:19:07) and Afigbo Esther (41:06:08) came second and third respectively. Mary Joy Ecmefu and Adeyeri Omololade completed the top five.
One of the most touching highlights was the participation of 76-year-old retired soldier, Enibukun Oyewole, who joined the 5km race.
“It is a passion. I have been running since 1973, and I will keep running as long as I have the strength,” he told reporters.
The Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke Adefemi, praised the revival of the marathon, assuring that the government would continue to invest in grassroots sports.
“This race shows how sports can bring communities together and inspire our youth. The Makinde-led administration remains committed to expanding opportunities for young athletes,” she said.
Olori Dr. Onikepo Akande also expressed delight at the marathon’s comeback after its suspension.
“I am happy that this marathon is back. We appreciate Governor Seyi Makinde for his support and for ensuring that sports remains a priority in Oyo State.”
The General Manager of Splash FM, Mr. Tunde Olawuwo, described the marathon as a “tradition of excellence,” promising to build on the legacy until it gains global recognition.
Founder of West Midland Communications, Oba Adebayo Akande, in his goodwill message, thanked God and stakeholders for making the marathon’s return possible.
“To God be the glory who in His infinite mercy has brought us together again for another marathon year. I thank Governor Seyi Makinde whose uncommon love for sports remains a beacon of hope for generations.
“To the marathoners, your very presence here is a mark of victory. Whatever the outcome, you are our champions.”
He also commended the efforts of the National Sports Commission, volunteers, doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists, describing their contributions as “inspiring and invaluable.”
Among other dignitaries present were the CEO of Splash FM, Mrs. Atinuke Adetunji, and the Zonal Coordinator of the Nigeria Sports Commission (South West), Mrs. Evelyn Fagbemi.
