President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
The extension was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
Adeniyi’s current tenure was originally scheduled to expire on August 1, 2026, following an earlier extension granted by the President.
According to the Presidency, the additional six months will enable the Customs chief to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project, a key government initiative aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, improving revenue collection, and streamlining cargo clearance processes across Nigeria’s ports and borders.
The statement noted that the extension would also ensure an orderly leadership transition within the Nigeria Customs Service.
During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and facilitate the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained the statutory retirement age of 60 years or have completed 35 years in service.
Adeniyi, a seasoned customs officer, joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.
Over the course of his career, he rose steadily through the ranks, becoming a Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, succeeding former Customs boss, Hameed Ali.
The Presidency expressed confidence that the extension would allow Adeniyi to complete critical reforms within the service while ensuring a smooth succession process ahead of his eventual exit from office in February 2027.
