The Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures around their premises.
This was as it directed the suspension of late-night activities, and prioritize the construction of perimeter fences and gates amid growing concerns over abduction and kidnapping incidents.
The directive was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the association and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the Oyo State CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and the Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.
According to the association, the recent wave of kidnappings and abductions in parts of the state has made it imperative for churches to adopt proactive security measures to safeguard worshippers and church facilities.
“Due to incessant abductions and kidnappings in recent times, Oyo CAN advises churches to be more security-conscious by strategically positioning security personnel and electronic devices within their premises and neighbourhoods.
“Churches should intensify prayers for the release of the abductees and suspend late physical activities because of the security situation in the state,” the communiqué stated.
The association further urged churches that are yet to have perimeter fencing and gated entrances to make such projects an immediate priority, describing them as critical components of security infrastructure.
It also advised church leaders to ensure that trained security personnel are deployed to monitor church premises, particularly during worship services and other gatherings.
As part of efforts to tighten security, CAN directed churches to conduct comprehensive security assessments of guards and other workers engaged in essential services within their premises.
The body further warned against allowing unknown persons or strangers to lodge within church auditoriums or church compounds, stressing the need for greater vigilance.
Beyond churches, the association appealed to members of the public to exercise caution in their movements by limiting unnecessary travel and avoiding late-night journeys.
CAN also urged residents to comply with the executive order issued by Governor Seyi Makinde prohibiting commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m. across the state.
Expressing concern over the prevailing security challenges, the association sympathised with families whose loved ones are currently being held hostage by kidnappers.
However, it commended efforts being made by both the state and Federal Governments to secure the release of abducted persons across Oyo State, with particular reference to the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Christian body called on relevant authorities to intensify rescue operations and expedite the release of all abductees to enable their safe reunion with their families.
“CAN, Oyo State chapter, will continue to collaborate with the government to ensure the peace, unity and stability of the state,” the communiqué stated.
The association’s latest advisory comes amid heightened concerns over security in several parts of Oyo State, with religious institutions, community leaders and residents increasingly calling for stronger preventive measures against kidnapping and other violent crimes.
